Surgical Weight Loss Options

surgical weight lossSurgical weight loss as an option is now more widely available than ever before. These methods give hope to the obese who have trouble losing weight through normal natural weight loss methods. Surgical weight loss can greatly improve patient quality of life, reduce risk for diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Some surgical intervention can be life saving in some desperate cases as have been shown in media.

Types of Surgical Weight Loss Available

Surgery weight loss procedures performed on the stomach and small bowel are also known as bariatric surgery. There are several types of bariatric surgery, and some of those types even have sub-types. Your doctor and surgeon will help you determine whether you are the right patient for this kind of surgery, and what type of surgery is right for you.

Gastric bypass surgery involves either stapling the stomach (known as RGB), or completely removing the bottom portion of it and rerouting the small intestine (biliopancreatic diversion). This results in a reduction in the amount of food a person is able to consume, as well as reduced calorie and nutrient absorption. It can often be preformed as laparoscopic surgery, making incisions smaller and recovery faster.

Gastric surgery weight loss comes with risks and should not be considered as an easy option for quick weight loss. If other necessary emotional and lifestyle factors are not addressed the benefit of surgical weight loss surgery will be short lived, and may result in a great deal of disappointment. Counseling before surgery is extremely important to ensure the patient's understanding and commitment to the new lifestyle that would enhance the chances of lasting success. It can not be emphasized enough that the patient has to follow professional advice before and after surgical weight loss treatment.

The concept is similar to that of gastric bypass in that it reduces the functional size of the stomach, but there is no rerouting of the intestines required. Instead of staples, a gastric band is used to create a smaller stomach pouch. It is always inserted via laparoscopic surgery, requiring only small incision, is quick and leads to quick recovery.

The adjustable lap band can be inflated or deflated by your physician at any time after it is in place, allowing the rate of weight loss to be adjusted if needed. The surgery carries fewer risks than gastric bypass. It is also completely reversible.

Surgery weight loss complications vary depending on what type of surgery is done. Obese patients do not undergo operations easily because they are usually associated with medical problems beforehand. Anesthesia and other essential surgical steps including opening into the abdomen is a much more complicated step in overweight individuals.

RGB gastric bypass carries risks of staples or bands coming off and pouch stretching, and nutritional deficiencies. Bilio-pancreatic diversion carries a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies than RGB. Both types put patients at risk for stomach leakage, which can damage other organs. Gastric lap band surgery is less risky due to the fact that it is minimally invasive, but it can result in some digestive problems.

Other aspects to consider before Surgical Weight Loss

Some insurance companies will help pay for bariatric surgery. Lap band and gastric bypass financing is available if your insurance will not. Low monthly payments are often available, and no interest plans are even offered to those with good credit who wish to pay the loan off quickly.
